The Story of June 12: A Turning Point in Nigeria’s Democratic History
On June 12, 1993, Nigeria held what is widely regarded as the fairest and most peaceful presidential election in its history. The presumed winner was Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola, a businessman and philanthropist who symbolized hope for many Nigerians.
But instead of progress, the nation faced heartbreak: the military regime annulled the results, plunging the country into political tension and nationwide protests. M.K.O. Abiola was later arrested in 1994 after declaring himself the rightful president and tragically died in detention in 1998.
Despite the darkness of that era, the spirit of June 12 never died. It became a symbol of resistance, a call for good governance, and a reminder that the will of the people must always prevail.
In 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari officially declared June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, replacing May 29. The move was not just symbolic it was a national recognition of the sacrifices made for Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
